Today is March 18, 2025. I am now a beautiful lady. Wow, look at me! Hhmm. But 15 years ago, when I was born there was another Lolo from far away land that wrote me a reply, an interesting one. He warns all about spoiling me too much. I recall the words of wisdom: “it is easy to love a child, much so an adorable one. Let’s all mindful that this child will have to be on her own someday. That what we do now will matter most about her future. Love is good but a misplaced love can hurt just as much. Love her but teach her the righteous ways. Teach her care and a good sense of responsibility.”
[“Give one a loaf of bread and you’ve fed him for one day. Teach one to make bread and you’ve fed him for life”; My Lolo said teach me how to make bread so I can be on my own knowing how to make bread for myself.]
Just a couple years ago, I learned in my Filipino class a great poem by Francisco Baltazar, a Filipino poet: “Sa taguring bunso’t likong pagmamahal Ang ikinasasama ng batang nunukal. Ang iba marahil sa kapabayaan, Ng dapat magturong, tamad na magulang.” (OUCH!!!)
Hhmmm. But my parents are good. They raised me the right way. Look at me now. Beautiful and Good. Wow!!!
